Paying Attention

Herein be random ruminations on politics, history, ideas, spirituality, religion, education, media, life, relationships, culture... and Boston sports when I really want to vent.

"If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention." (ubiquitous)

"Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never has and never will." (Frederick Douglass)

"I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do, because I notice it always coincides with their own desires." (Susan B. Anthony)

"Clearly the trick in life is to die young as late as possible." (William Sloane Coffin)

AMERICAN IRRATIONALS

What’s unnerving today is the sheer mindlessness and irrationality which renders our democracy all but dysfunctional.  Fundamentalists are a big part of the problem… they actually take pride in their anti-rational, anti-“secular reality” mentality.  And the GOP has managed to produce a boatload of seemingly insane elected officials, from Congress on down to sheriffs and the local school board.  Rep. Issa actually believes Obama is getting weapons to foreign drug cartels so they can kill Americans and then Obama can take away all our guns.  And he chairs the House committee in charge of investigations!

What about these two women?  Do they really believe what their signs say?  No government inspection of our food supply?  No child labor laws?  No minimum wage (pitiful though it is)?  No regulation of pollution?  No government subsidies to the very industries which fund the anti-government movement she has bought into?

(Note to conservatives: These industries want government subsidies without the regulations.  Sort of like a teenager wanting the car keys without curfew rules or having to buy their own gas and insurance.)

Not really mature, is it… this right-wing, anti-government irrationality?
