Paying Attention

Herein be random ruminations on politics, history, ideas, spirituality, religion, education, media, life, relationships, culture... and Boston sports when I really want to vent.

"If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention." (ubiquitous)

"Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never has and never will." (Frederick Douglass)

"I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do, because I notice it always coincides with their own desires." (Susan B. Anthony)

"Clearly the trick in life is to die young as late as possible." (William Sloane Coffin)

WHITNEY

Whitney Houston hit the big time like a force of nature.  Stunningly beautiful, multi-talented and with pipes that allowed something previously unthinkable — comparisons to Aretha.  Whitney Houston could sing!

Then she met Bobby Brown.

Back in the day, Bobby Brown was well-known around Boston, and not just for New Edition.  He had multiple babies all over town, each by a different mother.   The daughter of a famous gospel singer married him anyway.

Life with Bobby meant drugs, physical assaults, and the sad, steady decline of the woman and her career.   Last night, Whitney’s ex-husband cried on stage and said he loved her.

A man who beats women and leaves babies all over town is a disgrace, no matter how much musical ability he has.  Whitney Houston had many talents in abundance but lacked the talent that perhaps mattered most — choosing and loving a good man.
