Paying Attention

Herein be random ruminations on politics, history, ideas, spirituality, religion, education, media, life, relationships, culture... and Boston sports when I really want to vent.

"If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention." (ubiquitous)

"Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never has and never will." (Frederick Douglass)

"I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do, because I notice it always coincides with their own desires." (Susan B. Anthony)

"Clearly the trick in life is to die young as late as possible." (William Sloane Coffin)

GOD’S TREE HOUSE

The pious patriarchialists in this photo are Jews, but I could have chosen a similar picture of Muslims clerics.  Or Southern Baptists preachers.  Or the Roman Catholic College of Cardinals.  While religion is supposed to be about spirituality, transcendence and the Divine Mystery beyond human understanding, too many men in charge of organized religion are as small as childish boys who post a “No Girls Allowed” sign on their little tree house in the backyard.

The thing is: little boys eventually outgrow their sexist tree house and move on.  The grown men who run religions do not.
