RUSH SAVES
Yesterday on my road trip, I saw this billboard while driving on the interstate through rural South Carolina.  Apparently out here Rush is more than a well-compensated radio entertainer.  He’s now Messianic.  Rush Saves.  I’d have thought the pious Christian folks in South Carolina would believe that God or Jesus alone can save souls… not Rush.  Sounds like blasphemy to me. ...

ROAD TRIP HIATUS
To my 83 Followers and the three or four of you who really, really totally like this blog… I’m grateful to all of you… truly and sincerely… and I’ll resume these random ruminations in ten days, after returning from a road trip during which I will be interacting with America without access to the Internet. Imagine that.  :)

Ravens' Suggs leaves Brady off Pro Bowl ballot -... →
When Ted Williams hit .406, he was denied the American League MVP award because one small-minded sports writer did not include Williams anywhere on his ballot.  The Red Sox icon who hit for the highest average since forever and forever since did not even make the top 10 list of one spiteful sports writer… sort of like this spiteful footballer who left the putative NFL MVP, Tom Brady,  off...

GOOD NEWS FOR ISLAMOPHOBES
It seems New York City will let the terror mosque get built right on top of Ground Zero (sacred ground for Americans, though God knows we can’t spend money for first responders’ medical bills because that would add to the deficit, and God despises deficits).  But what do you expect?  That’s liberal, effete, East Coast, un-American, God-hating, Obamacare-supporting New Yorkers...

WHERE THE MONEY IS
They once asked Depression-era bank robber Willie Sutton why he robbed banks.  “Because that’s where the money is,” he replied. Today, as politicians in both parties threaten to strangle our fragile economic recovery in the name of reducing the deficit, there is one area of spending cuts which could make a big difference… yet politicians in both parties annually want to...

CHRISTMAS IN CUBA IS CALLED PARRANDAS
While Miami’s Little Havanna fantasizes that all of Cuba is waiting impatiently for the return of their former oligarchic rulers, the Cubans themselves know how to throw a party.  This beautiful woman and amazing costume were in this year’s Parrandas parade.

Kentucky 'Creationist Theme Park' Gets Preliminary... →
I GET IT!  These Uber Conservative Christians think America’s secular government is persecuting them AND they think the government is Satan’s spawn… but they also don’t mind taking government tax subsidies to help pay for their money-making theme park.  “You cannot worship God and mammon.” Jesus said you can’t, but these guys try.

RED DOOM RISING
The 2010 Census is out, and the pundits’ instant consensus  — because they must pundifocate instantly or the camera moves to someone else — says the GOP will gain even more power because of population growth in red states (represented here in green for some reason.) Not so fast.  Reality is always a bit more complex than pundits have time to contemplate. People moving from...

A VERY LARGE RENAISSANCE MAN
The Big Shamrock has taken Boston by storm since he joined the Celtics.  He’s everywhere, and Boston loves him.  Tonight he was guest conductor at the Boston Pops.  How cool is that?

THE MILITARY AS ENGINE OF SOCIAL PROGRESS
Many people on the left are not too crazy about the military, with its shock and awe firepower, military-industrial complex, bloated budgets, and worst of all, the cheap, self-serving patriotism of “Support Our Troops” politicians. The soldiers, sailors and Marines themselves are generally professional and honorable men and women, and we all know people who grew up and turned their...

TEA PARTY HAS A NEW GOLDEN RULE
Alot of these Tea Party types are Christian. “Compassion is voluntary?” Is that what her bible tells her? “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you… unless  you just don’t feel like it.

HER NEEDS ARE FEW
This is my dog.  Her name is Che.  She has very few wants or needs. She wants enough food and water to sustain her existence. She wants toys to chew on.  All the time. She wants her head patted and her stomach rubbed for extended periods of time. When I get in my car to go somewhere, she wants to ride shotgun. She wants to go outside when she has to go to the bathroom. And when she goes...

Starting in the 1950s the military led the way on integration and equal opportunity (first soldiers, then officers).  Maybe the military will lead us into the Green Revolution that so many powerful interests want to stop.

In an action which is unprecedented on several levels, black, brown and white inmates of Georgia’s notorious state prison system are standing together for a historic one day peaceful strike today, during which they are remaining in their cells, refusing work and other assignments and activities. This is a groundbreaking event not only because inmates are standing up for themselves and their own...

OBAMA'S ASSAULT ON OUR FREEDOM
Virginia’s Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli won the first round of his lawsuit against Obama’s health care reform.  Federal Judge Henry Hudson (who happens to be part owner of a GOP consulting firm that lobbied against Obamacare) has ruled that the individual mandate requiring eveyone to buy health insurance or pay a fine is unconstitutional.  Cuccinelli says Obama may be well...

CLASSLESS.
There is the New York Jets’ strength and conditioning coach throwing his left knee into an unsuspecting Dolphins player running full speed down the sideline in yesterday’s game.  The player stayed down for a while but luckily was not hurt.  I wonder if the coach will keep his job.

HITTING OBAMA FROM THE LEFT
Liberal cartoon shots like this are easy.  And it’s easy to be disappointed in Obama from the left — as I am — Afghanistan, Bush tax cuts, Gitmo, to name three.  But… I’m reading maybe my 20th book on Abraham Lincoln, The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery by Eric Foner.  The more of these books I read, the more I realize that Barack Obama is very...

GOOD TIMES IN BEANTOWN
Things are going great for a passionate Boston sports fan… like moi.  In fact, they’ve pretty much been great since October of 2004.  After years of love and agony, it still takes a little getting used to. The Celtics are stacked and playing beautiful team ball which is a joy to watch and could well win another title when they’re all healthy for the playoffs. The...

TEA BAGS BOILING IN CUPS OF GOVERNMENT $$
I’m waiting for Tea Party “Patriots” to refuse the following government services and benefits: Money.  Then Social Security, Medicare, mortgage interest tax deduction, federal dams and water in the West (hello?  There’d be no farming or ranching in the West without the federal government), highways, airports, safe flights, schools, public universities, postage stamps,...

DEATH PANELS! SHE WAS RIGHT AFTER ALL!
Arizona’s Republican Governor, Jan Brewer, and its GOP legislature made cuts in Arizona’s Medicaid participation, eliminating state funding for certain transplants.  She called these procedures “optional” and “Cadillac” health insurance.  It’s a government-imposed death sentence for Arizona citizens who need transplants and are too poor to pay for them...
